{"id":19409,"date":"2025-05-28T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-28T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/itpatagonia.com\/?p=19409"},"modified":"2026-04-20T14:51:19","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T12:51:19","slug":"que-es-twin-transition-principios-sustentables","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itpatagonia.com\/en\/blog\/que-es-twin-transition-principios-sustentables","title":{"rendered":"Twin transition: how digital transformation can boost sustainability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/publications\/global-risks-report-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Global Risk Report<\/a>, drafted in Davos in 2023, the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.weforum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Economic Forum <\/a>identified that 8 of the top 10 long-term risks to the global economy are environmental and social risks.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, organizations face double pressure: <strong>adapt to an increasingly digitalized environment and respond urgently to the climate crisis.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As explained by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paconsulting.com\/global-shifts\/sustainable-world\/the-twin-transition-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Royal Schiphol Group and PA Consulting<\/a>, at the intersection of these two agendas an optimal point (or \u201csweet spot\u201d) is generated, where <strong>Digitalization amplifies and accelerates sustainability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is to say, the solution is not to choose one of these paths, but to <strong>explore them in an integrated way<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From this need arises the concept of <strong>twin transition<\/strong>, also known as double transition or twin transition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twin transition proposes a <strong>synergy between digital transformation and ecological transition<\/strong> to generate a more sustainable, competitive and resilient development model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This approach is changing the rules of the game in sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, telecommunications, retail, and the financial sector. But it is especially challenging for the technology industry, offering the <strong>opportunity to rethink how we produce, consume and manage resources<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, we explore what the twin transition is, how it emerged, and its connection to decarbonization in the digital age.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also analyze the opportunities and challenges it poses, and address the importance of greening technology and the 10 principles for technological sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is twin transition?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The twin transition is the parallel and complementary transformation toward a digital and sustainable economy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is based on the principle that digitalization\u2014through technologies such as artificial intelligence, IoT, big data, automation, and blockchain\u2014can accelerate and enhance environmental goals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among them, the <a href=\"https:\/\/itpatagonia.com\/en\/huella-de-carbono-en-la-industria-it\/\">reduction of carbon emissions<\/a>, energy efficiency or circular resource management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Far from being independent processes, <strong>Technological innovation and environmental sustainability reinforce each other<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Connected sensors allow real-time monitoring of an industrial plant&#039;s energy consumption.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AI algorithms can optimize logistics routes to reduce carbon footprints.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Circular economy models are viable on a large scale thanks to digital platforms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Twin Transition is not just a technological evolution or an ecological response: it&#039;s a comprehensive strategy that redefines the future of business, cities, and public policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the concept emerged: the European Green Deal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The term began to consolidate from 2019, when the <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/index_es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Commission<\/a> launched the <strong>European Green Deal <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/strategy-and-policy\/priorities-2019-2024\/european-green-deal_es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Green Deal<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This initiative set the goal of making Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To achieve this, a series of public policies were proposed focused on reducing emissions, the efficient use of resources, and the promotion of clean energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the Green Deal also recognized that digital transformation was a key factor in achieving these goals. Reduce social inequalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5<\/strong>. Boost economic benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6<\/strong>. Reduce energy consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7<\/strong>. Contribute to the creation of a resilient and competitive growth model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8<\/strong>. Create job and knowledge opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9<\/strong>. Improve information traceability and data transparency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In practice, according to the survey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bain.com\/about\/media-center\/bain-in-the-news\/middle-east\/2022\/three-key-steps-for-digitally-delivering-sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Three-Part Game Plan for Delivering Sustainability Digitally<\/a>, developed by Bain &amp; Company and the World Economic Forum, 40% of executives from various industries and regions, perceive that <strong>Digital technologies are having a positive impact on their sustainability goals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Decarbonization in the era of Industry 4.0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The fourth industrial revolution, or Industry 4.0, is marked by connectivity, automation, and the intelligence of production systems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this context, the twin transition offers powerful tools for achieving effective decarbonization of the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The twin transition is the parallel and complementary transformation toward a digital and sustainable economy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/strategy-and-policy\/strategic-foresight\/2022-strategic-foresight-report_es#:~:text=El%20informe%20sobre%20prospectiva%20estrat%C3%A9gica%20de%202022%20ofrece%20un%20an%C3%A1lisis,y%20reglamentarios%20en%20el%20hermanamiento.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Strategic Foresight Report 2022<\/a> of the European Commission mentions some applications of technology and its benefits to enhance sustainability in a harmonious manner.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These include robotics and the Internet of Things, blockchain, digital technologies, and quantum computing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a practical level, some examples are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>IoT and smart sensors<\/strong>: allow monitoring of energy consumption and emissions in real time, enabling data-driven decision-making.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Digital platforms<\/strong>: improve the traceability of products and materials, and enable circular economy models.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Digital twins<\/strong> (digital twins): allow industrial processes to be simulated before implementation, reducing waste and optimizing resources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AI algorithms<\/strong> They help predict consumption and behavior patterns, allowing us to anticipate energy demand or avoid unnecessary use of resources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All this translates into more efficient processes, cleaner value chains and <a href=\"https:\/\/itpatagonia.com\/en\/que-son-las-empresas-de-triple-impacto\/\">products with lower environmental impact<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Digitalization not only optimizes what exists, but <strong>opens new possibilities to transform carbon-intensive sectors<\/strong>, such as energy, construction, transportation or agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Opportunities presented by the twin transition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The integration of digital and green creates a number of significant opportunities for organizations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Innovation and competitiveness<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies that adopt sustainable and digital technologies gain efficiency, reduce operating costs, and improve their positioning among environmentally conscious consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>New business models<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The twin transition gives rise to proposals such as resource sharing (collaborative economy), reuse platforms, and services based on environmental data, among others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These models are more sustainable and have high scalability potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Job creation and new professional profiles<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>New occupations are emerging that combine technological skills with sustainability knowledge. These include specialists in environmental data analysis, digital energy efficiency, and those developing green solutions, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Greater organizational resilience<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Digital technologies allow us to anticipate risks, adapt processes, and respond quickly to crises such as natural disasters or logistical disruptions. Despite opportunities for collaboration, for example in corporate settings, digital and sustainability teams are not accustomed to working together.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Governments also face challenges such as low citizen confidence in their ability to respond to challenges of this magnitude.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Green technology and twin transition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGreening\u201d technology and giving it a clearer purpose that puts the planet and people at the center can have a positive impact that ensures a sustainable future without leaving anyone behind.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is expressed in the &quot;First Approach to the Dual Transition in Mexico,&quot; prepared by the German Cooperation for Sustainable Development (GIZ).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"389\" src=\"https:\/\/itpatagonia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Path-to-a-digital-and-sustainable-economy_Imagen-3png-1024x389.png\" alt=\"Oportunidades que plantea integrar lo digital y lo verde.
